You’ve got the ring and you’re ready to scream it from the rooftops- “WE’RE GETTING MARRIED!!!” Maybe you’re just in the day-dreaming stage, or maybe you’ve already got a date picked out. Having engagement pictures taken is an important moment in the planning process too. It’s a moment to connect, experience what it’s like to be photographed by a photographer, and a chance to show off what your love is to everyone who’s ready to cheer you on in life. Picking your backdrop for your engagement session is a chance to set the tone for this part of your story. That’s why I created this guide to help you decide exactly where to take engagement photos in Cleveland, Ohio! From chic urban spots to laidback coastal vibes along Lake Erie, to outdoor escapes surrounded by greenery, Cleveland has endless options for every couple’s style.

Cleveland, Ohio Inclusive Wedding and Couple’s Photographer
Before we dive into things, I wanted to introduce myself in case we haven’t met yet. My name is Sam, owner of Wilder Photography, and I am a Cleveland-based inclusive wedding photographer serving romantic souls with a sense of wonder. I am a Midwest-native, who recently returned to this neck-of-the-woods from living in the Pacific Northwest. No matter where my business takes me, there are so many beautiful love stories just waiting to be documented — including yours.
Getting your engagement photos done and booking your wedding photographer is a task I recommend doing hand-in-hand. Engagement sessions offer a chance for you and your photographer to connect, get comfy with their particular style, and take you all a step closer to feeling like much more like a friend who gets to chase you around on your big day. I believe in this early connection so much, that engagement sessions are complimentary to all my wedding packages. If you’re searching for an unconventional, hopeful romantic to ugly-cry alongside you, let’s chat!

Downtown Cleveland is home to over 250 restaurants and bars, ample shopping, and several districts that each boast their own atmosphere just waiting to be discovered. From the Warehouse District brimming with 19th century charm, to the iconic Flats District buzzing along the riverfront, there’s something for everyone.
1. East 4th Street
The hub for all downtown activities, whether it’s a show at Rocket Arena or a game at Progressive Field, East 4th is best enjoyed with a walk over Hope Memorial Bridge for photo ops with the quintessential Cleveland icons (the Guardians).

2. Brick and Barrel (The Flats)
Grab a beer at this rustic brewery in The Flats and take a stroll along the Rivergate Park. The dramatic bridge structures and river views make for a beautiful backdrop coupled with a great drink stop at Brick and Barrel. If you love a good slice of pizza, be sure to stop at Sainato’s!

3. Playhouse Square Theatre District
There’s something so romantic about the warm glow of marquee lights, isn’t there!? If you and your honey are big history buffs (or theater kids), you’ll love to learn that this early 1920s gem is the largest performing arts center in the US outside of New York City. Located along Euclid Avenue, mosey on over to Ben & Jerry’s or Masthead Brewing Co. to make the most of your urban engagement session in downtown Cleveland.

4. Little Italy, Cleveland
Located along the main strip of Mayfield Road, you’ll be transported to a cozy historic neighborhood full of quaint cafes, bakeries, boutique shops, and art galleries.

5. Hingetown Love Doves
One of the 5 murals featured in the 2017 Instagram #KindComments Mural Project, the Hingetown Love Doves pride mural is the sweetest place to feature in your engagement session. The handiwork of Erin Guido and Joe Lanzilotta, the two love doves are located toward Detroit Avenue off West 25th Street.

6. Gordon Square
If murals and art are up your alley, Gordon Square is the perfect place for your Cleveland engagement session. Located in the heart of Cleveland’s Detroit Shoreway neighborhood, it’s the perfect blend of intimate and urban.

There are tons of good eats, shopping, and activities to partake in. Check out the Land Ahoy Mural (by Jessie Unterhalter + Katey Truhn), located at 5209 Detroit Avenue. At 3 stories tall, this colorful geometric gem is the perfect backdrop to add some color to your urban engagement session. Or head over to 6805 Detroit Avenue, where Justin Michael Will’s “Cartoon Mural” offers whimsical doodles against a turquoise backdrop. Adjacent to the Cartoon Mural, you’ll find Lisa Quin’s “Dream Big” mural which features a black backdrop, adorned with neon flowers, vines, and stars. There’s no shortage of an art-scene in Cleveland, that’s for sure!

Cleveland Beach Engagement Photo Locations
With Lake Erie right at the city’s edge, Cleveland offers plenty of stunning coastal backdrops for your engagement session. From sandy beaches to rocky shorelines and wide-open lake views, these spots bring a breezy, romantic vibe to your photos. Sunset along the water creates a dreamy golden glow, while overcast days add a moody, dramatic touch that feels straight out of a coastal getaway. If you and your partner love the water or simply want your photos to feel relaxed and timeless, the lakefront is the perfect choice.
1. Vermillion Lighthouse at Harbor View Park
Located about 45 minutes from downtown Cleveland, Vermillion Lighthouse will make you feel like you’re vacationing in Cape Cod. The classic red and white lighthouse is surrounded by a sprawling lawn and rocks that lead down to the lake. Stroll the boardwalk or the sandy beach before enjoying the town of Vermillion!

2. Huntington Reservation and Beach
Huntington Beach is definitely one of the ‘go-to’ beaches in the summertime for Cleveland residents to cool off. The soft white sands are surrounded by 5 protective break walls. As you stroll along the soft sand, keep your eyes peeled for sea glass or feel take a dip in the lake! Above the beach, you’ll find Huntington Reservation, which has an open green space and small forest with Porter Creek hidden just behind the trees. It’s the perfect Cleveland engagement session location if you want the “best of both worlds” with the beach and green space.

3. Headlands Beach State Park
One of my personal favorite parks to watch the sunset at, Headlands Beach State Park is located on the east side of Cleveland. With over 30 acres of space to explore, Headlands Beach is a unique Cleveland beach to choose for your coastal-inspired engagement session. The lake, wind, and sand contribute to sand dunes which are home to rare plants and wildlife viewing! On the eastern end of the park, the breakwall is a great place to break out a fishing pole near the Fairport Harbor Lighthouse.

4. Voinovich Bicentennial Park
The perfect combination of waterfront and skyline views. Located downtown near the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, you’ll enjoy views of Lake Erie while being in close proximity to breweries, good eats, and Huntington Bank Field. The best time to have the park “all to yourself” is at dusk or dawn. Because it is adjacent to the stadium, be sure to choose a date when the Browns don’t play if you want to avoid the congestion of crowds.

5. Cuyahoga Valley National Park
It’s hard to believe that there’s a national park just 30 minutes from downtown Cleveland! There are tons of trails to explore with endless beauty to enjoy.
- Tree Farm Trail loop is an easy 3 mile stroll that leads through spruce and pine trees to Horseshoe Pond with a fishing pier. Tree Farm Trail would be the perfect spot for a winter engagement session!
- The scenic overlook at Blue Hen Falls is a popular hiking spot in the Boston, Ohio area. The 15-foot waterfall is well-worth the hilly hike that winds through the park.
- The Everett Covered Bridge, spanning across Furnace Run, is the only remaining covered bridge in the county. This beautiful bridge is rich in history and such a sweet spot for an engagement session anytime of the year — but especially in the Winter!
